The genus Sphingobacterium is characterized and distinguished from the genus Flavobacterium by the presence in its strains of high concentrations of sphingophospholipids as cellular lipid components. S. spiritivorum is designated the type species of the genus Sphingobacterium. S. mizutae ATCC 33299 (= GIFU 1203) and F. indologenes ATCC 29893 (= CDC 3716 = GIFU 1347 = NCTC 10796 = RH 542) are designated the type strains of the two new species. Emended descriptions of the type strains of S. spiritivorum and S. multivorum are presented.", }
