Strain CJ71T was isolated from sediment from the estuarine wetland of the Han River, South Korea, by enrichment culture using pyrene as the sole carbon and energy source. The isolate was white-pigmented, rod-shaped, Gram-positive, strictly aerobic and motile. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strain CJ71T had the highest sequence similarity (96.9 %) to Brevibacillus formosus DSM 9885T. The predominant cellular fatty acids in strain CJ71T were anteiso-C15 : 0 (49.5 %), iso-C15 : 0 (16.9 %), iso-C14 : 0 (16.9 %) and iso-C16 : 0 (4.9 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 52.4 mol%.
