Abstract

Species of the genus are noted for their numerous cellular appendages or prosthecae that extend from the cells. This investigation confirms that the genus is polyphyletic based on an extensive analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of several named species of the genus. The analyses indicate that some species are more closely related to non-prosthecate genera, including , , and , than they are to other species of the genus . For this reason, two of the clades which are polyphyletic with the type species, are renamed as new genera. The currently named species , , and are reclassified in two new genera, gen. nov. and gen. nov. with four new combinations: comb. nov. (the type species) and comb. nov., and comb. nov. and comb. nov. (the type species). The type strain of is strain 9b (=ATCC 23634 =VKM B-1376). The type strain of the other species in this genus is strain 17 (=VKM B-2499 =CCM 7569). The type strain of is strain 524-16 (= NCIB 2233 =ATCC 35022). The type strain of the other species in this genus is strain 11 (=VKM B-2498 =CCM 7594).
