Abstract

A Gram-positive bacterium, strain GW8-1761, was isolated from soil close to the Marmore waterfalls, Terni, Italy. 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity studies showed that strain GW8-1761 belonged to the genus , being most closely related to JCM 3165 (98.9 %), IFO 13941 (98.5 %), JCM 7626 (97.8 %), IFO 13244 (97.6 %) and DSM 46137 (97.6 %). Strain GW8-1761 could be distinguished from any other species with validly published names by 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of less than 97.5 %. Chemotaxonomic data [major menaquinone MK-9(H); major polar lipids diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol, with phosphatidylcholine and aminoglycolipids absent; major fatty acids C, C, C iso, C 8 and summed feature 3 (C 7 and/or C iso 2-OH)] supported the affiliation of strain GW8-1761 to the genus . The results of DNA–DNA hybridizations and physiological and biochemical tests allowed genotypic and phenotypic differentiation of strain GW8-1761 from the most closely related species. Strain GW8-1761 therefore merits species status, and we propose the name sp. nov., with the type strain GW8-1761 (=DSM 45050=CIP 109316).
