Abstract

The taxonomic status of an unknown actinomycete isolated from a sand-dune soil was established using a polyphasic approach. Isolate S186 had chemotaxonomic and morphological properties consistent with its classification in the genus , grew on agar plates at NaCl concentrations of up to 15 % (w/v) and formed a distinct phyletic line in the 16S rRNA gene sequence tree. Its closest phylogenetic neighbours were , , and , with sequence similarity to the various type strains of 96.9 %, but it was readily distinguished from the type strains of these and related species using a range of phenotypic properties. It is apparent from the genotypic and phenotypic data that strain S186 belongs to a novel species of the genus , for which the name sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is S186 (=CGMCC 4.2057 =DSM 45083).
