Abstract

Strain C4, isolated from sea cucumber intestine in Weihai, Shandong, PR China, is a novel Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, amphitrichously flagellated, short rod that grows as creamy white bacterial colonies on plates. Optimal growth of the strain was observed at 28–30 °C, pH 6.5–7.0 and at a concentration of 3 % NaCl. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 49.0 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain C4 is a member of the genus and was most similar to JLT2006. The major cellular fatty acids of strain C4 were Cω7/iso-C 2-OH, C and Cω7. The sole respiratory quinone was Q-8. The predominant polar lipids in strain C4 were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol and an unidentified phospholipid. Based on morphology and physiological characteristics, strain C4 should be classified as a novel species in the genus , for which is proposed. The type strain is C4 (=ATCC BAA-2611=CICC 10839).
