Salmonella vrindaban, a new and atypical serotype from pig
More LessABSTRACTAmong 96 strains of Salmonella isolated from pigs and man, including 20 serotypes, one atypical strain of Salmonella was isolated, named Salmonella vrindaban, with Salmonella O and H antigens 45: a: e, n, x and O and H antigens of Arizona 11 : 35–28. Biochemical characters were not typical for either Salmonella or Arizona.

On the species-definition
More LessABSTRACTIn modern classification the species are defined as groups of related serofermentative phage-types and are the fundamental units, while in orthodox classification, which is beginning with the higher groups, the species are defined only by biochemical (mostly fermentative) methods.

On the classification and nomenclature of the family Enterobacteriaceae
More LessABSTRACTWhile the genera and subgenera of the family Enterobacteriaceae are defined by biochemical (mostly fermentative) methods, the species of all established genera are diagnosed primarily by serological methods. In contrast to this, genera and species in orthodox classification are defined only by biochemical methods.
To reach an agreement, it is proposed to designate the “species” of the orthodox classification as subgenera and to define the species according to the modern classification as groups of related serofermentative phage types.

On the classification and nomenclature of some nonmotile and coccoid diplobacteria, exhibiting the properties of Achromobacteriaceae
More LessSUMMARYFive species and two subspecies of nonmotile and coccoid Achromobacteres are described, including the organisms hitherto known as Bacterium anitratum Schaub and Hauber and Alcaligenes metalcaligenes Castellani and Chalmers. They are Achromobacter mucosus (von Lingelsheim 1906) Mannheim and Stenzel 1962, A. conjunctivae Mannheim and Stenzel 1962, A. haemolyticus Mannheim and Stenzel 1962, A. haemolyticus subsp. alcaligenes Mannheim and Stenzel 1962, A. metalcaligenes (Castellani and Chalmers 1919) Bergey et al. 1925, and A. citroalcaligenes Mannheim and Stenzel 1962.

The taxonomic status of Sporosarcina ureae (Beijerinck) Orla-Jensen
More LessSUMMARYA study of the taxonomic status of 9 strains designated as Sarcina ureae. Inview of the fact that the present classification of this species is not appropriate, we recommend that it should be classified as belonging to a separate genus Sporosarcina. We suggest that the genus Sporosarcina should be placed in the family Bacillaceae. As the type culture we recommend the strain BS 860 (ATCC 13881).

Transfer of Thermoactinomyces viridis Schuurmans et al. 1956 to the genus Thermomonospora as Thermomonospora viridis (Schuurmans, Olson and San Clemente) comb. nov
More LessSUMMARYOriginal descriptions and comparative studies indicate that Thermoactinomyces monosporus and Thermoactinomyces viridis produce single spores on aerial mycelium only and should be classified as a species of Thermomonospora. Thermoactinomyces viridis Schuurmans et al., 1956, becomes Thermomonospora viridis (Schuurmans et al.) comb. nov. Our isolate P101 is proposed as a neotype of Thermomonospora viridis and is deposited at NRRL (B-3044). The species name Thermoactinomyces monosporus (Lehmann and Schütze) Waksman should be recognized as a “nomen dubium” because of the inadequate description, particularly of its cultural and physiological characteristics and the lack of a culture of the type strain.
