Abstract

SUMMARY

The genus has had an irregular history, and there is a need for the designation, with international approval, of a neotype strain for the type species, . The only strain which has been proposed for designation is ATCC 398. The genus has not yet been clearly distinguished from . The capacity to grow anaerobically at the expense of glucose fermentation shows a gradual transition in a series of strains and lacks precision as a criterion for differentiation between these two genera.
