Abstract

ABSTRACT

Review of the literature on the lipopolysaccharide of leads us to the following conclusions: (1) The structure of the peripheral portion, i. e. “O side chains,” varies extensively within each “genus.” (2) Although the structure of the central portion, i. e. “R core,” tends to be rather similar within each “genus,” there are cases of two strains which synthesize the same O side chains and, at the same time, different R cores.
