Abstract

Classification of the species of the genus Berkeley and Curtis is considered in light of the proposal that the genus be divided into two genera: Berkeley and Curtis (family ), with tapered vegetative cells and encapsulated myxospores (microcysts); and (family ), with cylindrical vegetative cells and similar myxospores. The latter genus, as redefined, would include (the type species), , and . Two species are recognized as belonging to the genus (the type species) and .
