Abstract

The intergeneric relationships of have been examined by both classic taxonomic criteria and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) polynucleotide sequence homology. Analysis of characters according to Adansonian principles indicated that 19303 was phenotypically most closely related to streptococci, , and DNA:DNA hybridization studies, however, failed to reveal significant relatedness between the listeriae and , or . It is recommended, on the basis of the results reported here and the results of a previous hybridization study, that and be transferred to a new genus, , as , and subsp. , respectively. A new family, , is proposed for the genera and
